Modern glazings
Nowadays, the individual panes for motor and window glazing are almost always produced through a float glass process. During this process, the glass solidifies in a shallow bath of molten tin. This processing method has been used since the 1960s and it reduced the price of the sheet glass significantly while preserving its high quality. Thus, nowadays it is possible to sell multi-pane glazing at reasonable prices. First, this was made through coupled windows with single glass pane of 4 mm (this thickness is still common today). Thicker glass panes are almost only used for large area sound insulating windows.
Since the heat-protection-regulation of 1978 double glazing has been used as heat protection and insulation glass more and more.
Since the middle of the 1990s, the use of 'low-E-coating' has become common also. It lets unpleasant solar radiation into the room but reduces the emission of the short-wave thermal radiation. Within this kind of glazing, there is a layer of vacuum-deposited metal that is mostly applied on the site that faces towards the space between the different glass panes.
The edge compound is another significant factor for heat insulation qualities and the required noise protection of multiple glazing. The material of the used spacers, the used adhesives and the sealing material around the spacers are also of main importance for the glass compound quality. In addition, the glass compound is the most gas-tight possible in order to avoid the escape of the poured-in noble glass and the infiltration of air and humidity. In this way, the decreasing insulation ability because of heat or noise can be avoided.
