The term Zarge (outer frame) denotes the fixed part of the frame that is built into a window opening and within which the movable part of a window pivots on hinges. In everyday speech it is also called the Fensterstock, or window frame (Fensterrahmen) as opposed to the window sash. In window construction, by contrast, both the outer frame and the window sash belong to the window frame. The same nomenclature applies to doors, where one speaks of a door or window casing (Zarge).
