Showing your window in the right light

Anyone who decides to show their window in the right light can choose from a wide variety of design options. Windows create the transition from the interior to the outside world. That is why they also form the basis for the first significant impression that visitors arriving from outside, or simply passers-by, gain of the home’s interior. A window can be decorated beautifully. Anyone who enjoys colours and shapes and likes crafting can refresh their window decoration regularly – arranged by season, for example. Here we show you a few tips for decoratively enhancing your windows.

The right colours

Colours influence our mood. A window can be given colour in various ways. The most important option is decorative curtains. Window pictures kept in particular colours can also embellish a window in an appealing way. When choosing the decorative colours for a window, the rule is that they should harmonise with the interior décor. Anyone who owns predominantly white furniture should opt for light, airy colours. For spring, apple-green curtains suit a window well, for example, whereas in winter an appealing light grey or a rich cherry red goes with white interior décor. Black furniture can carry stronger, more vibrant colours at the window – such as snow white, sunny yellow or fir green. Anyone who prefers natural wood for their furniture can complement it with airy curtains at the window. Pastel tones and fabrics whose colours appear transparent or powdery are lovely for this.

Making window decorations yourself

Every window becomes more beautiful and even more perfect when it is styled with attractive window decorations. Window decorations can be made yourself or bought from an external supplier. For home-made window decoration there are, for example, special window paints called "Window Color". Using tube paints that appear transparent, an appealing motif is conjured up on a specially coated film; once dry, it is peeled off the film and stuck onto the window. The design can be created in a variety of colours, and there is a wealth of templates to suit every taste – in books or online. Window pictures you design yourself are also perfectly suited to keeping children occupied.

Buying decorations for the window

Specialist retailers offer a wide range of window decorations in all kinds of styles. In many cases they are attached to the window frame or hung at the top of the window. Other variants – like home-made window pictures – are stuck onto the window and can easily be removed again as needed. Window decorations for hanging are usually very long, so that they reach right down to the window sill and are therefore clearly visible even from a distance. They often feature transparent-looking glass or brightly coloured translucent plastic, so that the abundant light at the window can show the decoration off to good effect. Ready-made decorations are available, for example, in furniture shops (also online) and sometimes in DIY stores as well. Especially at Christmas and Easter, appealing festive decorations for the window are on sale that reinforce the romantic mood during these seasons.

Plants for the window sill

No window sill should be left without plants. Plants not only look good but also contribute to better indoor air. Conversely, hardly any plant can thrive without a window, since it is only through the window that it receives the light essential to its life. Anyone who likes low-maintenance options should choose a succulent, a cactus or one of the many climbing plants. Some of them can go for weeks without water. Most of these houseplants do, however, need sun, which is no problem given their position at the window.
